Good to know

  • Grayscale uses the same weighting your eyes do: mostly green, some red, little blue. That looks more natural than a plain average.
  • Pure black and white is best for scanned text and line drawings. Photographs look harsh.
  • The cut-off decides the split. Lower values make more of the picture white.

Questions

What is the difference between grayscale and black and white?

Grayscale keeps shades of grey. Black and white has only two colours, pure black and pure white.

Why does a plain average look worse?

Our eyes are far more sensitive to green than blue, so green should count for more. The weighting used here matches the standard.

Is it reversible?

No. Colour is discarded, so keep your original.
