Good to know

  • Converting to PNG does not restore detail a JPG has already lost. It just stores what is there without losing more.

Which format should I choose?

JPG for photos, PNG for graphics and anything needing transparency, WEBP for the smallest files on websites.

Will the picture lose quality?

Only when saving to JPG or WEBP, which are lossy. PNG is lossless. At quality 90 or above the loss is invisible for most pictures.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes, when saving to PNG or WEBP. JPG cannot, so transparent areas become the background colour.
