Good to know

  • PNG can be transparent and JPG cannot. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default.
  • For screenshots with sharp text, use a high quality such as 90 or above to avoid fuzzy edges.

Questions

What happens to transparent areas?

They are filled with a solid colour, white unless you pick another, because JPG has nowhere to store transparency.

Will text in my screenshot stay sharp?

At quality 90 or above, mostly. JPG is not ideal for text, so a few faint halos around letters are normal.

How much smaller will it be?

A photographic PNG often drops to a tenth of its size. A simple graphic may only shrink a little.
