How to pick a colour from any image

  1. Add an image.
  2. Click anywhere on it to read that pixel.
  3. Copy the HEX, RGB or HSL value, or use one of the main colours found automatically.

Good to know

  • The value is read from the full-resolution pixel, not the scaled preview, so it is exact.
  • A single pixel can be noisy in a photo. The main colours panel averages groups of similar pixels, which is often more useful.
  • Screens and printers show colours differently, so a picked value will match on screen but not always in print.

Questions

What is a HEX code?

A six character code such as #2f6f9f that web pages use to describe a colour. It is the red, green and blue amounts in base 16.

How are the main colours found?

By median cut: the pixels are split repeatedly along the colour with the widest range, and each group is averaged.

Why is my pick slightly off?

JPG compression changes pixel values a little. Pick from a PNG for the most reliable result.
