How to make a favicon from any image

  1. Add a square-ish picture or logo.
  2. Choose whether to crop it to a square or fit it inside.
  3. Press Make the icons and download them together as a ZIP.

Good to know

  • Design for 16 pixels, because that is the size people see in a browser tab. One letter or bold shape works. A detailed logo turns to mush.
  • Put favicon.ico in your site's root folder. Browsers ask for it there whether or not you link to it.
  • Add these lines to your pages: a link for the ico, the 32 pixel PNG and the apple-touch-icon.

Which sizes do I actually need?

favicon.ico, a 32 pixel PNG and the 180 pixel Apple icon cover almost everything. The 192 and 512 are for Android.

Can I use an SVG as the source?

Yes. Vector sources give the sharpest small icons.
