Compress an image to 20 KB

Twenty kilobytes is very small, about the size of a short text file. It is usually asked for with signatures, stamps and tiny passport thumbnails.

How to compress an image to 20 KB

  1. Add your picture.
  2. The target is already set to 20 KB. Change it if you need a different size.
  3. Press the button. The tool tries qualities and, if needed, smaller dimensions until the file fits.
  4. Download the result and check it before you upload it.

Good to know

  • Expect the picture to be reduced in pixels as well as quality. A 20 KB photo of a face will be small but recognisable.
  • Plain signatures on white paper compress extremely well, often to a few kilobytes. Photos with texture and detail do not.
  • Crop away empty space before compressing. Every unused pixel still costs bytes.

Questions

Is 20 KB enough for a photo?

For a small profile or ID thumbnail, yes. For anything that will be printed or viewed large, no. The detail simply is not there at that size.

Why is my signature so small afterwards?

To fit 20 KB the tool shrinks the pixel dimensions. A signature photographed at 3000 pixels wide will come out a few hundred pixels wide, which is plenty for a form field.

Can I get a sharper result?

Start from a well lit, tightly cropped original. Compression cannot add detail, but it wastes less of the budget on blank margins.
