Compress an image to a specific size

Upload forms often say 'under 200 KB' and nothing else. Enter the number and this tool searches for the highest quality that still fits.

How to compress an image to a specific size

  1. Add your picture.
  2. Type the size limit from the form, for example 100 and KB.
  3. Press the button. The tool tries different qualities and, if needed, smaller dimensions until the file fits.
  4. Download the result and check it looks acceptable before you upload it.

Good to know

  • The result is as close under your limit as the search can get. It is usually within about 10 percent, because JPEG quality moves in whole-number steps and one step near the top can change the size by a noticeable amount.
  • Very small limits force the picture to shrink in pixels as well as quality. That is normal and unavoidable physics: fewer bytes means less detail.
  • If your picture is already under the limit, it is returned unchanged.

Questions

Does it guarantee the file is under the limit?

Yes, for the file it produces. It measures the actual saved size at each step, so the figure you see is the real size.

Why did the dimensions change?

At small limits, lowering the quality alone would ruin the picture, so the tool also reduces the pixel size. You can untick the option to forbid that, but it may then fail to reach the limit.

Which format is best?

JPG works everywhere. WEBP is often 25 percent smaller for the same look, but a few older systems and forms do not accept it.
